This set of interactive activities from the Languages online resource introduces how to ask about and say one's age as a way of greeting. In addition, it introduces basic vocabulary for talking about family by highlighting the culturally specific and differentiating terms used to address family members on the basis of age and gender. Student activities include listening and responding, identifying and matching the correct age to the appropriate speaker and completing a family tree. Instructions in English, immediate feedback and answers with translations are provided, as well as resources for teachers including printable activities and flashcards.

  • This interactive learning resource is valuable for Indonesian language teaching and learning in mid-primary years and junior secondary years. It supports the Communicating and Understanding strands. It may be useful for the Reciprocating strand if supported by additional reflective activities undertaken in class.
  • The resource models simple sentences for asking about age and family members and provides opportunity for students' practice.
  • Students' listening comprehension of age and family terminology is tested.
  • Culturally specific values are demonstrated.and practice in addressing family members, including the role of gender terminology, is provided.
